Danke an alle fuer die Mails zum Geburtstag, habe mich sehr drueber gefreut. Mir geht es gut, alles ist fein, ich habe massig Spass. Leider gibt es nix neues zu berichten, die naechsten Fotos stell ich noch die Tage online. Ich wuensche allen Daheimgeblieben alles Gute und viel Spass, lasst es Euch gut gehen.

Das schlimme ist dass ich manchmal echt Probleme habe mich zu konzentrieren - und wenn ich dann alles schreiben will was in meinem Kopf rumschwirrt werd ich nie fertig. Diesen Post hier hab ich letzte Woche angefangen, ich hoffe dass ich nun wenigstens das wichtigste zusammen bekomme.

West Australien ist zur Zeit im Aufschwung, angetrieben durch die Nachfrage nach Bodenschaetzen (Eisen, Nickel, Aluminium, Gold) aus China. Demzufolge ist alles was mit Bergbau zu tun hat, gerade sehr wichtig, und alle Welt will im Bergbau arbeiten.
Mit meinen Jobs hab ich nun die ganze Zeit mit Leuten zu tun, und dann kommt man auch mal ins Schwatzen, und dann bekommt man Mailadressen und dann schickt man einfach mal seinen Lebenslauf rum und schaut was passiert. Auf diese Art und Weise bin ich an das Interview rangekommen, dass ich das letzte Mal erwaehnt habe.

Das Interview war am 16. Juni, also schon wieder zwei Wochen her. Ich war ja nicht so optimistisch, was meine Chancen anging, aber ich hab den Job! Und dann ging alles furchtbar schnell. Mein neuer Arbeitgeber ist im Goldbergbau, so dass ich neben einem allgemeinen Gesundheitscheck und Drogentest auch ein Polizeiliches Fuehrugszeugnis lassen machen musste. Das alles lief noch am selben Tag ab (ich sag ja, schnell), und dann wurde ich noch schnell zu einem Sicherheitstraining am Dienstag geschickt. Mittwoch habe ich dann die Flugdaten bekommen, und seit Montag den 23. Juni hab ich nun meinen neuen Job.
Stop. Was hat ein Flug mit dem neuen Job zu tun? Ganz einfach. Alle Minen hier in Australien liegen praktisch im Nirgendwo. Erstens ist Australien so gross, und zweitens kaum besiedelt wenn man erstmal aus der Stadt raus ist. Mein neuer Arbeitsplatz ist nun in Leonora rund 830km nordoestlich von Perth, und liegt mitten in einer Region die "Goldfields" (Goldfelder) genannt wird, weil hier so viel Gold "rumliegt". Mit dem Auto ist es eine 8h Fahrt hierher, und so ist es einfacher, die Arbeiter alle einzufliegen.
Gearbeitet wird im Schichtsystem, d.h. man arbeitet fuer ein paar Tage hier (z.B. neun), um dann ein paar Tage (z.B. fuenf) frei zu haben. Und weil es so langweilig hier ist, wird man fuer die freien Tage auch wieder ausgeflogen. Das ganze nennt sich FIFO, was hier nicht fuer First In First Out, sondern fuer Fly In Fly Out steht ;) Ziel fuer den Flug ist uebrigens Perth, was natuerlich passend fuer mich ist. Man kann natuerlich auch seine freien Tage hier verbringen, was als Idee auch gar nicht mal so schlecht ist.

Die eigentliche Mine liegt in Gwalia, etwa 4km ausserhalb von Leonora. In Leonora/Gwalia wurde 1896 das erste Gold in West Australien entdeckt, und ist fuer den Goldrausch und die weitere Besiedlung West Australiens mit verantwortlich. Allerdings wurde 1963 die Mine geschlossen, weil die Vorkommen augenscheinlich erschoepft waren. Neue Technik macht es aber moeglich, nochmals tiefer zu graben und besser zu suchen, so dass die Mine wieder eroeffnet wurde (da ist noch mehr in der Erde). Das Gold liegt aber nicht einfach so in der Erde, sondern ist in den Felsen eingeschlossen (als ganz kleine Stellen, mir faellt keine bessere Beschreibung ein), und um das Gold aus den Felsen zu gewinnen, wird hier gerade eine neue Verarbeitungsanlage gebaut. Wie das genau funktioniert schreib ich spaeter mal.

Die Unterkunft wird, wie auch das Essen, komlett gestellt. Ich wohne hier in einem Camp, was ein bissel wie ein Ferienlager ist, aber das ist tausendmal besser. Mein Zimmer ist nigelnagelneu, komplett mit eigenen Klo und Dusche, Kuehlschrank, Klimaanlage, Bett, Schreibtisch, Schrank und Plasma TV. Das Zimmer bleibt auch meine wenn ich frei hab und wieder zurueck in Perth bin. Das Essen ist super, im Moment ist es das beste was ich hier bis jetzt in Australien bekommen habe :o - jeden Tag was anderes, Fruehstueck, Take Away fuer Lunch und dann das beste - Eis!
Eingeflogen bin ich uebrigens nur mit meinen kleinen Rucksack, alles andere hab ich in der Beatty Lodge gelassen. Es gibt einige dort, die in den Minen arbeiten und die Beatty Lodge als Basis benuzen. Ich fliege diesen Donnerstag Abend zurueck nach Perth, um dann und naechste Woche Dienstag oder Mittwoch wieder einzufliegen.

Die Frage ist natuerlich, was ich hier mache. Tja, ich sitze mal wieder den ganzen Tag vorm Computer und mache Word & Excel. Ein Glueck, dass ich darin einige Erfahrung habe ;) Mein Buero ist neben der neuen Verarbeitungsanlage, und ich arbeite fuer die Instandhaltungsabteilung (was fuer eine miserable Uebersetzung).
Am Samstag hat mich Bob auf eine kleine Tour durch die Gegend mitgenommen, als er zu einer Inspektionsfahrt ist. Da hab ich das erste Mal die Mine gesehen - und war beeindruckt. Fuer Sonntag hat er dann sogar eine Tour durch die Mine organisiert, wo ich dann mit Alan hin bin - unter Tage. Fotos & Videos & Story reich ich nach. Was sagt uns dass uebrigens - mir gehts gut. Ich bin auch grade fleissig dabei, Auto fahren zu ueben. Dazu auch spaeter mehr.

Von meinen Jobs in Perth hab ich zwei (Woolworths & Belissimo) gekuendigt, die beiden anderen werde ich erstmal behalten. Kuendigung ist hier uebrigens total einfach. Man geht einfach hin (oder ruft sogar nur an) und sagt dass man nicht mehr kommt. Das geht aber fuer den Arbeitgeber auch so einfach, was dann fuer einige ein Problem ist... Anyway, an meinen letzten Tagen bin ich mit der Kamera rumgerannt und hab Fotos gemacht. Auch diese gibt es spaeter.

The worst thing? I'll really have problems concentrating - and to actually write all the things down whirling around in my head is next to impossible sometimes. I started writing this message last week, I hope that I'll finish today at last with the important things.

Right now there is a big boom here in West Australia, the reason being the demand for resources (iron, nickel, aluminium, gold) in China. So everything mining related is very important and everyone coming to WA want to work in the mining industry.
Having four jobs I met all kind of people, and sometimes you talk, and sometimes you get some contact details, and then you send some resumes around and just wait what happens. In this case this strategy worked and I got the interview I mentioned last time.

This interview was on June the 16th, more than two weeks ago. I wasn't very optimistic concerning my chances, but I got the job! And then everything happened very fast. My new employer is in the gold mining industry, so I had to get an health examination, drug test and a police clearance. This all happened on the same day, and on Tuesday they sent me to a safety induction. On Wednesday I got the flight details, and since Monday the 23rd of June I officially got my new job.
Stop. Why do I need a flight for my new job? There is an easy explanation. All the mines here in Australia are located in No Man's Land. First, Australia is rather big, and second no one's living here when you live the big centres. My new position is in Leonora, about 830km northeast of Perth, in the middle of a region called "Goldfields" coz there is so much gold around. It would take at least an 8h drive by car to get here, and so it's more convenient to fly all the employees in.
Usually, people work in shifts here, e.g. you work for some days here (like nine days), and then you have some free days (like five). On the free days you fly out coz it's so boring here. This system is called FIFO, which means Fly In Fly Out instead of First In First Out ;) By the way, the base is still Perth, which suits me well. Of course you can also stay in Leonora on your free days, which is also an interesting idea.

Actually, the mine is located about 4km outside of Leonora in Gwalia. The first gold ever for WA was discovered here in Leonora/Gwalia, and was a main reason for the goldrush and the settlement of WA. The mine itself was closed in 1963 when the sources were depleted. But with some new technic around it's possible to dig again, this time deeper, coz there is still some more gold deep down. But unfortenately the gold isn't just laying around, but it's embedded in the rock, and in order to get the gold extracted a new processing plant is built. I'll write later how this process works exactly.

Accomocadation and food is included. Right now I'm living in a camp (like a camp we used to get when we were kids) but it's way better. I've got a brand new room, including ensuite facilities, fridge, air conditioner, bed and so on and a big plasma TV. The room is mine, even when I go back to Perth on my days off. The food is the best I ever had since coming to Australia (you can imagine what kind of food had 'til now :o) and every day there is something new, breakfast, lunch take away and the best - icecream all the time ;)
By the way, I just came here with my small daypack, I left all my stuff with the Beatty Lodge. It's quite normal to live there and working in the mines at the same time. My fly out is this Thursday evening, and I'll fly back here next week Tuesday or Wednesday.

Of course I still have to tell what I'm doing here. Frankly, I'm a pen pusher :), sitting all day in front of a PC and doing Word & Excel (lucky me, I got some experience there). My office is next to the new processing plant, and I'm working for maintenance.
On Saturday Bob took me along for a small tour around the area when he went to check some stuff. On this occasion I saw the mine for the first time, and I was really impressed. He even organized a tour in the mine for me, where I went with Alan underground on Sunday. Pics & movies & information in the next post. But this ist just telling that I'm well and happy here and that ewverything is fine. By the way, I also learning to drive, but more of this also later ;)

I quitted two out of my four jobs back in Perth, but I'll keep working for Maccas and the Garden. Quitting is fairly easy here, you just have to tell or phone and say that you'll stop working. But it's also easy for an employer to kick you, which might be a small problem for some... Anyway, on my last days I took pictures of everywhere I worked, which I'll publish later.

Okay, I'll have to stop writing, coz the translation takes some time. As you can read & see, I'm having fun and everything is fine. I'll write more later, and thanks to all reading and writing some comments, and everyone have fun!
